Aron Regimen: Common Questions and Answers
What is the Aron regimen?
An individualised eczema treatment developed by Dr Richard Aron. A specialist pharmacy mixes a cream that combines an anti-inflammatory steroid, an antibacterial agent and a moisturising base, to treat inflammation, bacteria and the skin barrier at the same time.
Who can use it?
Adults and children of all ages, including babies, whose eczema has not been controlled by standard treatment. A consultation is needed to decide whether it is suitable for you.
How quickly will I see results?
It varies. Many patients notice less itch and better sleep within the first days to weeks, with the skin continuing to improve over the following weeks. Severe, long-standing eczema usually takes longer.
How long will I need to use it?
Treatment is used frequently at first, then reduced gradually as the skin improves. Once eczema is under control, most patients use the cream only when early signs of a flare appear.
Is it safe?
All the ingredients are established medicines. The strength is chosen for you and for each area of skin, and use is reduced as the skin improves. Treatment is supervised with reviews at two and four weeks. Your doctor will discuss possible side effects with you.
Does it contain steroids?
Yes. The steroid is blended into a large volume of moisturiser, and its strength is tailored to the patient and the part of the body being treated.
Can I use it on my face?
Yes, but the face usually needs a milder preparation than the body. Your doctor will prescribe the right one for each area.
Can I use it if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Please tell your doctor. Treatment can be used when pregnant, but this needs individual assessment.
Is it a cure?
There is currently no permanent cure for eczema. The aim is to bring it under control and keep it there with as little treatment as possible.
Will my eczema come back?
Eczema is a long-term tendency, so flares can recur. Many patients find flares become less frequent and easier to manage, and they can treat them early with their prescribed cream.
Does it work for everyone?
No treatment works for everyone. If the regimen is not right for you, or your eczema needs treatment we do not provide, we will tell you and advise on next steps.
Do I need to stop my current creams?
Do not stop anything until you have discussed it with us. We will review everything you use and tell you what to continue and what to pause.
Is it available on the NHS?
No. The Aron regimen is not routinely available on the NHS. eczema-doc is a private clinic.
How do I get started?
Book a video consultation through our website. We will take a full history, assess your skin, and – if appropriate – prescribe your treatment, which is prepared by a specialist compounding pharmacy and sent to you. Follow-up reviews are at two and four weeks.
