Can Eczema Be Cured?
It is one of the first questions people ask. The honest answer is that there is currently no permanent cure for eczema. But that is far from the whole story. For most people, eczema can be brought under good control, and many people spend long periods with clear or nearly clear skin.
Why there is no "cure"
Atopic eczema involves a combination of factors: genes that affect the skin barrier (such as filaggrin), an immune system that tends to overreact, and environmental triggers. We cannot change your genes, so the tendency to eczema remains even when the skin is clear.
Does eczema go away on its own?
Often, yes – especially in children. Many children with eczema see it improve significantly or clear as they grow older, although some continue to have eczema into adulthood, and in some people it returns later in life. Eczema can also start for the first time in adults.
Be wary of "cure" claims
You will find many products and programmes online claiming to cure eczema. Be cautious of anything that promises a permanent cure, asks you to stop all medical treatment, or relies on extreme diets without medical supervision. Unnecessary food restriction, particularly in children, can cause harm.
What is realistic?
With the right treatment, realistic goals for most people are:
skin that is clear or nearly clear
itch that no longer disrupts sleep
fewer and milder flares
a simple maintenance routine to keep eczema under control
a clear plan for what to do if a flare starts
The key to long-term control
Long-term control usually depends on three things: treating flares effectively and early, reducing treatment gradually rather than stopping suddenly, and caring for the skin barrier every day. For many patients, addressing bacteria on the skin is also important.
